Tucked away in the Redwood Valley of Mendocino County, California, Frey Vineyards is widely credited as the first-ever producer of biodynamic wines in the U.S. Purely organic since 1980, this is a winery that has been well ahead of the curve in producing delicious wines without extracting a toll on Mother Earth in the process.
Just over 1,200 cases of Frey’s 2005 Redwood Valley Syrah were produced, a relatively small production in line with most of their selections.
Perhaps their most ‘decorated’ biodynamic wine, this Syrah took charge at the 2008 San Diego International Wine Competition, taking a Gold Medal in the Critic’s Challenge, as well as earning eight other silver and bronze medals at various festivals at last count.
Estate-bottled, Frey describes this brilliantly purple-hued Syrah as balanced with refined tannins, along with big jammy flavors of black plum, boysenberry, and a bit of mocha. Sounds like a great match for your next steak, or some Dagoba chocolate!
This wine will retail in the $15-20 range for a 750 ml bottle.
