Founded in 1987, Quivira (pronounced key-VEER-ah) was one of the first certified 100% organic and biodynamic wineries in Sonoma. It began using biodynamic principles in 2005 under the former owners, Henry & Holly Wendt, receiving its Demeter certification in November of 2005. Purchased by Pete Knight in 2006, the winery has continued to use these natural farming and growing practices and to build upon them to include other eco-friendly and sustainable projects. Some of these include the on-going restoration of Wine Creek, which runs through the property, and the recent conversion of the winery to 100% solar power.
The 2007 Grenache Rosé was harvested from their estate vineyards in the Dry Creek Valley and aged for six months in stainless steel. Only 446 cases were made.
2008 was the second year in a row we’ve tasted this Grenache Rosé in their Dry Creek Valley tasting room, and were again not disappointed. Lovely, bright strawberry notes paired with a crisp, but well-rounded acidity make this the perfect wine for a sunny afternoon outdoors. As a side note, this is a true rosé in a traditional style. You’ll find no residual sugar here; this wine is bone dry, and a good example of why many rosés are finally finding homes on restaurant wine lists again.
