Cooper Mountain Vineyards 2007 Pinot Noir Reserve (RSV)
Resting on the slopes of an ancient volcano, Beaverton, Oregon's Cooper Mountain Vineyards knows a thing or two about terroir. Planted initially in 1978, the vineyards started with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and have since branched out to include Oregon varietals such as Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc. The estate vineyards started following biodynamic farming principles in 1990, achieving certified organic status by the Oregon Tilth in 1995, and later meeting Demeter's rigorous standards for biodynamic certification in 1999. French-born Gilles de Domingo joined the family winery in 2004 as the first full-time winemaker. The 2007 Pinot Noir Reserve was harvested in the middle of October, and was aged in French oak barrels.
A blend of pinot grapes from three vineyard sites, the Reserve is dominated by flavors from the Grabhorn and Meadowlark vineyards. As winemaker Gilles de Domingo explains in his tasting notes for the '07 vintage, "Forget jammy. This guy has balanced structure." At only 4,200 cases produced, the alcohol is only 13.1%, allowing the flavor to peak through for the Pinot purists.
