Spottswoode 2006 Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon

This St. Helena, California winery has been growing estate Cabernet organically for nearly twenty-five years, becoming certified by the CCOF in 1990.  On a location that has been farming grapes since 1882, Spottswoode's forty acres are primarily planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller allotments of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Musque, and Sauvignon Blanc.  It is the latter grape that brought some recent notoriety to the winery, as Spottswoode's 2006 Sauvignon Blanc was chosen to be served at President Barack Obama's first state dinner in March of '09.  518 cases of the 2006 Lyndenhurst were produced, aged in 100% French oak barrels for close to 20 months.

It is fairly rare to find a U.S. wine made from grapes that have been organically farmed for more than twenty years.  Rich and broad on the palate with tastes of black cherry and blackberry, the '06 Lyndenhurst takes its name from a past moniker used prior to the Spottswoode name.  At $60 for a 750 ml. bottle, it's less than half the cost of the winery's estate Cabernet.

Currently at the winery, as well as Spottswoode's website.  Also available at numerous fine wine merchants around the U.S.

$60 at the winery, with some variations elsewhere in price by vintage.
