Located in Mendocino County, in arguably the heart of the American organic wine movement, Frey Vineyards has a near thirty-year legacy of sustainability and organic winemaking. While a handful of their wines are certified biodynamic, none contain added sulfites, with the only sulfites included being those that occur naturally. A family-run winery since its inception, the winemaking process is now managed by Paul Frey, with assistance from his niece, Eliza Frey. Frey Vineyards has been certified organic by the CCOF since 1980, and has since helped countless other wineries follow in their footsteps. 19,000 cases of the Organic Natural Red, which is made up of Carignane, Zinfandel, and Syrah, were produced, with 13.9% alcohol by volume.
As Frey’s best selling wine, the Organic Natural Red is a great every day wine. With a bright garnet hue, this wine is balanced and medium-bodied. Paired with pizza at the time of our tasting, we were impressed by the full fruit and versatility of a wine often found for less than $10.
The Organic Natural Red is widely distributed, and can be found at outlets across the country. We found a bottle at our local Whole Foods Market.
