Prelius 2007 Morello Di Prile (Maremma Toscana)

With 52-acres of organically-farmed grapes cultivated by Italy’s Stianti Mascheroni family, the Prelius estate includes approximately 25 acres devoted to Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Vermentino.  Just two miles from the sea, the estate enjoys a frequent breeze during the peak summer months, which allows the grapes to ripen at a more gradual pace.  Named for an ancient lake that is no longer in existence, the award-winning Prelius label (at left) represents the fluid waters that once flowed on the property.  The 2007 Morello Di Prile is made from 35% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with 30% Merlot for roundness.  8,500 cases were produced of this wine, which at 14.0% alcohol was aged in French oak casks.  Certified organic by the European Community, under the control of Q.C&.I. International Services, partner of Consorzio Per Il Controllo Dei Prodotti Biologici (accredited by the USDA).

With a vivid, dark purple color, the Morello Di Prile illustrates a great balance of structure, elegance, and aromatics.  With notes of oak, we also detected a hint of spice in both the nose and finish.  We were impressed with the smooth tannins on the finish, and overall would expect this wine to grow in complexity with a little bit of age.

At 1,200 cases imported to the U.S., it may be a bit difficult to find this wine in your local store.  For more information, see Wilson Daniels Ltd., the exclusive importer of Prelius wines in the U.S.

About $22 for a 750ml. bottle.
