North Coast Brewing Company - Cru d'Or Belgian Style Ale
A leader in the craft beer movement, Ft. Bragg, California's North Coast Brewing Company is located not far from the Mendocino wine region where several of the world's best organic wines call home (there must be some great karma in those soils). With well-known brands including Red Seal Ale, North Coast features two organic labels in its current portfolio, Cru d'Or and Old Plowshare (the latter a Celtic-style Stout). Certified by the Oregon Tilth, Cru d'Or is a mahogany-colored, Belgian-Style Dubbel made with 8% ABV.
When we first sampled Cru d'Or, it was alongside two organic pale ales in a three-way tasting. Despite the high alcohol, we found a beer with a heady floral aroma and delicious caramel finish, thanks in part to the belgian yeasts that went into it. If you like your beer with a little substance but without a heavy bitterness, this is one micro-brew that doesn't force you to make that trade-off.
North Coast Brewing Company is currently distributed in 36 states (including at Whole Foods Market, and also exported to Europe and the Pacific Rim.
We paid about $7 for a six-pack at our local Whole Foods Market.
