With no website to speak of, Samuel Smith leaves much about their beers open to interpretation. But while details of the brewery may remain a mystery, one thing that's no secret is this USDA-certified organic lager is not a lightweight. Established in 1758, Samuel Smith is Yorkshire's oldest brewery, and one of England's few remaining independents. The hard, crystalline brewing water is still drawn from a well sunk 200 years ago, and an old school label befits a throwback kind of beer. With additional certification from the U.K. Soil Association, you can be sure you're drinking a beer made from malted barley and aromatic hops grown from certified organic farmers.
Light golden brown, with a hint of unfiltered cloudiness, we encountered a beer with little bitter aftertaste and a smooth finish. Recommended food pairings include dungeness crab, herbed chicken, hummus, and smoked salmon, so apparently this beer has good taste in dinner companions as well.
Imported exclusively by Merchant du Vin in the U.S., Samuel Smith's Organically Produced Lager Beer can be found across the country in many locations, including Whole Foods Market.
